What the human research shows
The most-discussed healing peptide on the internet has never been tested in a controlled human trial. Every outcome below is graded on animal data, which is why every grade is a D — not because the results are bad, but because they are not yet about people.

What it is
BPC-157 is a fragment of a larger protein, Body Protection Compound, identified in human gastric juice in the early 1990s by a research group in Zagreb. The synthetic fragment is 15 amino acids long, which makes it a small, relatively stable peptide.
Almost the entire published literature comes from a single laboratory and is conducted in rats. That is not disqualifying — many good drugs began that way — but it means the results have not been independently replicated at the scale you would want before drawing conclusions about people.
How it is thought to work
The proposed mechanisms are plausible and overlapping: increased expression of growth-factor receptors at injury sites, promotion of new blood-vessel growth (angiogenesis), and modulation of the nitric-oxide system. Each has support in animal tissue.
None of these mechanisms has been demonstrated in a human study. Mechanism in a rat tendon is a reason to run a human trial, not a substitute for one.
What is still unknown
- Whether it does anything at all in humans at the doses people use.
- Whether promoting blood-vessel growth carries any risk in tissue you would not want to grow — the question is unstudied, not answered.
- What is actually in the vials sold as BPC-157, since there is no approved manufacturer and no regulatory oversight of purity or content.
Regulatory status
No marketing authorisation. Sale for human use is an offence for the seller.
FDA placed BPC-157 in a category that bars it from pharmacy compounding, citing safety uncertainty.
Listed as a non-approved substance under the prohibited list since 2022.
